Today's assignment is my earliest memory, and I've got that one down. It was my second birthday party. My mom was pregnant with my brother, and I had a cake with marshmallow flowers on it.
What I remember most was being excited that people were coming over, waiting and waiting for my grandparents and my aunts and uncles to arrive. I was the oldest child on both sides of the family, so at the time of my second birthday, I had no siblings and only one (younger) cousin. The adults were the guests that I was anticipating.
I remember having two ponytails and hanging out near the clothesline in the backyard because my parents could see me as they set up for the party, and I could see the driveway from there, so I knew when the guests started to arrive. (My birthday is in June, so my family party was always a cookout outside, and we also celebrated Father's Day at the same time.)
(One of the few photos of that day that survives. Most of the party was on slides, including the cake, and my mom tossed out all the slides in a cleaning frenzy. She keeps asking me if I have them, as she often dumps crap she doesn't want at my house to get it out of her house, but I don't have them.)
I wore a dress that my grandparents bought me in Hawaii, but I don't really have a memory of the dress or of them going on that trip. I also don't really remember the party - my most vivid memories of the party are the waiting for guests to arrive and my very pregnant mom bringing the cake out.
So, what's your first memory?
